Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Artisans play a significant role in the socio-economic fabric of many communities, contributing to job creation, cultural preservation, and local economic development. However, the entrepreneurial growth of artisans is often hindered by limited access to markets, resources, and skills development opportunities. Digital media platforms, such as YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, have become transformative tools, offering artisans access to training resources, mentorship, marketing opportunities, and networking channels. In Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, artisans represent a diverse group engaged in trades like pottery, leatherwork, tailoring, and metalwork. Leveraging digital media can enable these artisans to build their entrepreneurial skills, enhance their product visibility, and expand their customer base. Recent research underscores the potential of digital media to democratize skill acquisition and market access for artisans, enabling them to compete in both local and global markets (Adewale & Usman, 2024). This study examines the extent to which digital media is used to enhance entrepreneurial skills among artisans in Jos North and the challenges they face in its adoption.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of digital media, many artisans in Jos North face challenges in accessing and utilizing these platforms effectively. Issues such as digital literacy, financial constraints, and infrastructural limitations hinder their ability to harness the opportunities digital media offers. As a result, artisans may struggle with limited market access, inadequate entrepreneurial training, and stagnation in business growth. This study addresses these challenges by exploring how digital media enhances entrepreneurial skills among artisans in Jos North and identifying strategies to overcome barriers to its effective use.
